Scented Coconut Oil Deodorant

I have had a couple of requests for this recipe here tis. The last couple of years I have used this but last summer found it made my clothes a little greasy. I was using too much of it as it was unperfumed and I worried about odour. Putting a scent in means only a light wipe with it…. it’s really effective, simple to make, costs effective and is very gentle. I have read that some people are allergic to cornflour in which case arrowroot can be used.

3 heaped tablespoons of coconut oil

6 tablespoons of baking soda

6 tablespoons of cornflour

8 – 10 drops desired essential oil (or a little of your favourite perfume)

Melt the coconut oil in a pan, add the baking soda and cornflour and mix well to combine.

Add your desired scent and stir well. Poor into a small mold. This doesn’t have to be greased. Put in fridge to harden then run a little hot water around the mold to free. Don’t sit in a container of hot water because it melts quite easily.

This recipe makes about 2/3 cup (I have never measured it) One bar will last me over a month. Store wrapped in waxed paper or a tin in a cool dark place.

  1. Thanks so much, Wendy. I happen to have everything needed for this and don’t expect to go out again this weekend. How come your list is only as long as your arm? 😉 If mine were that short, I’d be pretty happy. Sometimes when I get off the computer, I ‘need to rest’ and there is a list of ‘books to read’ that’s longer than my list of ‘things to do’ . . . what’s a woman to do,, eh?

    • Let me know if you try it 🙂

I deliberately keep it that short for fear of trauma lol. And you are very right “What’s a woman to do”….! Rest and read your books, life’s too short not to and you have enough on your plate not to just do the things that recoup the batteries and feed the soul.

  2. I made this the other day as I’d run out of both deodorant and toothpaste (I’ve been using home made for 12 months or so). I was able to bypass the “melt the coconut oil” stage as 3 weeks of temperatures that have mostly been over 30C will do the job nicely for you. 😉 I added lavandula officinalis to mine but was a little heavy handed with the oil. No matter, it’s a wonderful relaxing and delicious perfume and nothing like conventional lavander oil and I love it. I noticed yesterday that I was bit on the nose (the morning had been hectic and I’d forgotten to put any on) so I smeared a smidge of it on and relaxed instantly from the aroma of the oils which also instantly masked and smell. The coconut oil is anti bacterial and anti microbial too I think which kills the bad bugs that make sweat smelly and the bicarb and cornflour help to dry out excess moisture. 10 busy hours later when I should have been in rather serious need of a shower, there was nothing but the lingering perfume of the lavandula oil. 😀 I can’t recommend this recipe highly enough, whichever scent you choose. I’ve used citrus in the past but then I spent the day craving lemon slice of which the deodorant smelled.

    • lol, that last sentence made me giggle lol.

I love this too and it lasts ages and I should’ve written all the properties but didn’t ….so thanks for all of that 🙂 The lavandula sounds lovely. I have a wee jar of natural cream perfume I wear and often put a little of that in it, love to smell it through the day.

      Thanks for your comments 🙂

    • Let me know if you try it, what you think of it 🙂 I love it and will never go back to paying heaps for a natural one.

Thanks Robbie 🙂 My blog is about as basic as it gets though I think – I can’t figure out how to do other stuff. You have gorgeous photos down the left hand side of yours and I don’t know how to do that. The banner took ages to get right. I can’t even figure out how to do my links properly (when I refer back to other blogs) That I have even got this far with it is a wonder lol.
