Ok… after talking about it I made some and I like it 🙂 Coconut oil has anti-bacterial qualities and there are many recipes around for the paste which also uses baking soda. I posted a couple of days ago on using Turmeric as a tooth whitener/polisher (which is very effective) and someone suggested I try it in the toothpaste.
3 good tablespoons coconut oil, softened
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp tumeric
Whisk all together well until thick, well combined and creamy. Store in sterile jar. Use on a dry toothbrush and brush gently for a minute over a basin of water (It’s messy)
This doesn’t taste bad. It has a mild flavour, the turmeric takes the edge off the baking soda but is not over powering. Apologies for the poor picture quality (will replace at some stage!)

You are a great gal! No thinking required, I just have to follow the recipe! So, I’ve written that down and will give it a go. Though I think in the colder weather it might be a bit challenging to use – what are your thoughts on that?

🙂 I found last winter it just went too hard, but I understand beating it in a blender till fluffy puts enough air through it to keep it soft. Yet to try that though I am going to make some lavender lotion that way (one day soon!) so will see how that works.

You can run the jar under hot water to soften it up, coconut oil has a relatively low melting point 😉

I use a coconut oil/bicarb toothpaste and even when it’s down to 10C inside the house over winter I just used the handle of the toothbrush to loosen some of the hard paste and then smooshed it onto the bristles. It melts quick enough. 🙂

No, turmeric whitens teeth funnily enough but should be wiped off skin quickly.

this one I will try in the next week. I use to cook with tumeric, but have not had it around in awhile. I am so amazed this works since it does turn everything orange when you get it on the counter /clothes, but with oil it might not!:-)

I never would have thought that turmeric would be used to brush/whiten your teeth with. I am not sure that I will try it though 😦 sorry.

Thanks for the recipe. I saw a video on whitening your teeth with Turmeric but they mentioned that it could stain your porcelain sink. Does anyone know if it will stain a crown? Would like to try this but I don’t want a yellow crown. 🙂

Hi Renee. I personally wouldn’t try it with a crown – porcelain needs to be wiped down immediately if you spill this on it.

Makes sense! Turmeric helps with inflammation and coconut oil can kill bacterias and oil pull, whiten , etc and baking soda whitens. We were using turmeric and coconut oil for my daughter’s staph infection and it healed her eczema tremendously. Also great for colds so why not!

Tumeric is a great spice! I use it as an anti-inflammatory too and have read quite a bit about its healing properties. How wonderful it helped your daughters eczema, it’s a nasty thing for kids. My husband suffered terribly from it, especially as a kid, till his early thirties when he kicked sugar and added more green and orange vegetables. He never gets it now at all.

Brilliant, I’ve been using just Turmeric and baking soda to clean my teeth, it works really well, but it was getting everywhere, mixing with Coconut oil is a great idea, three amazing ingredients together, you can’t go wrong.

This recipe is great and no the turmeric does not stain your teeth. I’ve modified the recipe a little and added ground clove, cinnamon and peppermint essential oil for taste. It works great and even my twelve year old daughter prefers this to conventional toothpaste. And that’s saying something!

would ingesting the tumeric in capsule form still be effective with swollen gums/gum disease? I have crowns and partals and dont want to risk staining from tumeric paste.

No, I don’t think so. It is the direct application that works here…though I would try oil pulling with coconut oil. I have also read a mouthwash with rosemary essential oil works for this.

I saw a video about this toothpaste on facebook, went to the health food store today to get tumeric and peppermint essential oil (had coconut oil) and now read these comments. One said you wouldn’t recommend using if you had a crown. I have one! So I shouldn’t use?

Hi Laurie 🙂 No, I wouldn’t use it with a crown, it would stain it. Possibly coconut oil with a little baking soda or bentonite clay would be better for you though it wouldn’t offer the same results as tumeric

I added in bentonite clay, calcium magnesium powder, and peppermint and spearmint essential oils. Tastes fantastic!!

I now make this with fractionated coconut oil, bentonite clay, orange essential oil, baking soda and tumeric – just haven’t updated yet 🙂

Is a cap same as a filling??? Don’t want any stains….glad I have found this blog…been wondering for ages hae al ingredients ready to go but a filling on my front tooth!!!!! Don’t need stains there…
