Sticky Date Scrolls

I had one of these in a cafe once then craved another one for ages. Now I make them once a month or so.

1 1/2 cups dates (chopped)

3 tbspns brown sugar

1 cup water

1 tsp gated orange rind

1 quantity scone dough  (below)

Place dates in a pan with water, sugar and rind and simmer till thick (5 mins approx). Leave to cool.

Scone dough:

3 cups flour

6 tsps baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

75 grams butter, softened

2 tablspoons sugar

1 – 1/2 cups milk

Sift flour and baking powder into large bowl, add salt. Rub in the butter until mix resembles fine breadcrumbs, mix in the sugar. Add the milk, 1 cup first then as much as is needed to make a soft dough. Pat out onto a floured board into a rectangle about 1 cm thick. Spread with date mixture leaving around 11/2 cm border around the sides. Roll up as you would roll sushi. Slice the log into 9 segments and put face down onto a parchment lined oven tray. Bake in preheated oven 220deg C until light golden – approx 10 – 15 minutes. Serve hot with butter.

  1. They look like just the thing to be dunked into a large tin mug of tea whilst leaning on a spade in the garden for “on the go” morning tea 🙂 …when they fall INTO the tea and you have to go all rumplestiltskin on yourself for not being more careful, hey, that’s your own fault! (well…it’s “my” own fault as thats what ALWAYS happens when I dunk…I have a slow reflex quotient 😉 )
